Personal Statement of Faith project
It is important that we not only know what we believe, but why we believe what we believe. Then, when trial comes, or when doubters or seekers question us, we're better able to "give an answer for the hope that is in us," and to do so graciously, confidently and boldly.
Here's a template you can use for building your own personal statement of faith. This is not an easy task, as I think you'll discover as you work your way through the outline, but it can be a most satisfying way to strengthen your faith, and to be able to share from that strength.
Remember, the object is not only to state your beliefs but to support them with Scripture. A good place to start is to review the Apostle's Creed, or the Westminster Confession of Faith, both of which are available online these days. The Baptist Faith and Message is another excellent source of information, but remember, you must look up the Scriptures yourself and understand and incorporate them into your life, not merely accept what these statements of faith say.
Keep in mind that the language you use to write this statement of faith will be steeped in Christianese, and that's okay. However, an important next step in your role as a working Christian is to find ways to say these things in language your coworkers can understand, especially those who have read little of the Bible itself. That's why using Luke wherever you can is so helpful, because he wrote his gospel specifically to people who knew little of the Jewish faith that birthed Christianity, and therefore would be unfamiliar with terms like Messiah, etc.
Enjoy the journey, because we promise you the Holy Spirit will make known to you the truths you seek to know, and then will call them back in the moments when they will be useful to you in serving God.
One final note: We have NOT listed these in any order of importance. Instead we have listed them in an order that is likely to help you build on your knowledge.
