Our Weekly Devotional

Shortly after the release of his first three collections of Bible studies on faith and work (30 Moments Christians Face in the Workplace), Madetomatter's Senior Writer began to look for new ways to reach working Christians. In February, 2002, the first weekly devotional was released under the title "Marketplace Moments." Now approaching it's tenth year, the column's title was changed to Made to Matter on January 1, 2008. With over 500 devotionals written on topics important to workers in every walk of life, there's likely one written about the issues facing you right now, so we've placed them here, searchable, for readers to explore anew. Got a favorite? Write to let us know. Looking for something to send that friend whose suffered a loss, or who has had a serious setback at work? You might find a column that captures the essence of your feelings right here. From the deeply moving story of the WWII canteen in North Platte, Nebraska to the words and life-tales of some of history's best-known and least-known characters, there's something here for everyone.

Two years after he was beheaded, American missionary John Willfinger saved the lives of nine American airmen shot down by the Japanese in WWII..

The whole world stopped, or so it seemed in that instant, to watch this woman throwing things at me in the grocery store. She screamed and cursed and cried as she vented in rage, and nothing I said sank in or slowed down the torrent. Eventually she did stop throwing things, but the yelling continued. She was telling everyone-at the top of her lungs-how I'd just fired her husband at Christmas and now she couldn't even buy groceries for her children.

"Do we hate the boss who just fired us, the collection agent who's harassing us, the customer who didn't pay us? Or is it politicians we hate, right or left? Aliens, legal or illegal? Pro or anti-abortionists? Comedians who mock Jesus? News commentators or book authors who attack Christians or Christianity? The moment we grant ourselves permission to hate even those who hate us, we become one with them and not one with Christ."

Want to change the world? Then be different when everyone expects you to be the same.

A young Christian chemist struggles to neutralize a caustic blend of workplace personalities. Sometimes she wonders: Should I stay or should I go? Across town, a reporter pursues truth against a growing tide of political correctness and cynicism. Sometimes he questions: Is my career worth all this grief? Even in the church down the street, tension is no stranger. Staff members ask these same questions, and their answers are frightening. Since the Fall, friction has been the by-product of human interaction, and these days it's kindled white hot.

Since leaving California, this batch of troopers watched deserts turn to mountains, and mountains turn to dense Arctic forests, and then the wild would turn back to civilization somewhere shy of Denver. Nearly every soldier was seeing these American treasures for the first time, having never been more than 20 miles from home before the war.

Many were also seeing them for the last time.

God doesn't always take us around the storm. Often he leads us through them. There are times, though, when He intervenes in unique, circumstantial ways to guide us to a better pathway, sparing us from danger and trouble.

The ones who've seen the darkest nights know best just how much even the tiniest flicker of hope can light that night. This Christmas, let the shepherds be the wise ones as we point our friends, neighbors and coworkers to the Light that never goes out.

If you've read "Ethan's Story" in my book, Made to Matter: Devotionals for Working Christians, you know the miraculous story of our son's birth. For a time it looked as if both mother and baby wouldn't survive, but within hours my wife's condition stabilized, leaving only Ethan's life in doubt.

Every Christian is called to full-time service to God. The places where we serve will look different, but the principles that guide us are absolute, eternal and practical. Even in places where God isn't always welcome. Here are but a few ways for you to consider the influence your faith is having on your work, and the people who surround you there.

So Abram said to Lot, "Please let there be no strife between you and me, nor between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are brothers. "Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me; if to the left, then I will go to the right; or if to the right, then I will go to the left
